Significant rise in pub and bar insolvencies
    2023-02-14

The latest statistics from UHY Hacker Young which reveal the financial difficulties faced by pubs and bars are disappointing and very concerning.

According to the national accountancy firm, insolvencies rose from 280 in 2020/21 to 512 as of the end of 2022. Given the perfect storm caused by rising inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, staff shortages and escalating salary costs, it perhaps isn’t too surprising. Nevertheless, corporate failure is not inevitable and businesses can do something about it.

After STA Travel was liquidated, did the customers, the bank or the creditors get any money?
    2022-11-21

The COVID-19 Pandemic hit the travel industry hard. Borders were closed, airline fleets were grounded, travel bookings were cancelled, and travel agents were overwhelmed with customers wanting refunds.

Many travel agents closed their doors because travel bookings dried up.

STA Travel was one. Across 27 stores in Australia, STA Travel operated as a travel agent, booking travel for customers as agent for travel providers, mainly airlines and tour operators.

Last orders? Restaurant insolvencies up 64% in the last year
    2022-07-25

New data from UHY Hacker Young has found that UK restaurant insolvencies have increased by 64% in the last year... and it isn't just Covid that's to blame (though undoubtedly it is a factor). As eloquently put by a partner at UHY: "The restaurant sector has emerged from one crisis only to face an onslaught of other challenges."

Underwriting the future for hospitality and leisure
    2022-04-19

Four months ago I posted this article on the impact of Omicron related restrictions and other economic headwinds on an already battered hospitality and leisure sector. Operators in these sectors have worked so hard to survive the Covid-era by cutting costs, seeking operational efficiencies, and negotiating support from stakeholders and we all hoped that Omicron was but a short-term delay in the return to normalcy.

    Distress in the Hotel Sector
    2022-02-24

The pandemic has brought much uncertainty to the hotel sector — Intermittent national and regional lockdowns, work from home mandates and restrictions around domestic and international travel have left hoteliers in the unenviable position of keeping the lights on but without the occupancy or footfall of pre-2020. Government measures have no doubt helped, especially the ability to furlough large sections of the workforce, but as these measures are tapered down, some hotels – particularly city centre and airport hotels which rely on business travel — will struggle.
